Jazz at Chickenshed - Satchmo, Wild Bill and Peanuts!

7:30 — 7:30pm - Sunday, 21 July 2019

Venue: Chickenshed
Chase Side, Southgate, N14 4PE, United Kingdom,

A joyous tribute to three giants of Dixieland jazz – Louis Daniel Armstrong, William Edward Davison and Michael Andrew Hucko. Armstrong was nicknamed ‘Satchmo’ because of the size of his mouth, Davison was called ‘Wild Bill’ because of his hard drinking and womanising, and Hucko was labelled ‘Peanuts’ because as a child that was all he would eat! All three legends will be celebrated on Sunday 21 July at Chickenshed by award winning trumpet ace Enrico Tomasso & clarinet maestro Julian Marc Stringle. ‘Rico’ actually met and played with Louis Armstrong as a child and they became unlikely penpals, and the (Hucko-influenced) teenage clarinet prodigy Stringle had the honour to play on Wild Bill’s last ever recording at Shepperton Studios. With a glittering career spanning five decades, Armstrong is one of the most influential performers in the history of jazz, and Peanuts Hucko was arguably the best clarinettist ever to play in his band. Moreover, the pairing of Wild Bill and Peanuts in the Eddie Condon All Stars in the 40s and 5’s was ‘a match made in heaven’ and this fiery duo were undoubtedly the main draw at Condon’s bustling New York night club. Happily, performing with the fiery Tomasso Stringle duo on this unmissable tribute gig is the celebrated Jack Teagarden influenced trombonist Malcolm Earle-Smith, the gifted multi-instrumentalist Tim Huskinson on piano, Ronnie Scott bass ace Andy Cleyndert, and the dynamic powerhouse Steve Rushton on drums. Good time jazz at its very best. And if you have booked a holiday – cancel it!!! “Julian is an immense talent ! The best clarinettist to emerge in British Jazz in decades. His playing has ‘world -class’ written all over it” - Sir John Dankworth CBE “Stringle’s sound is exquisite . It has freshness , sparkle and a flute-like softness. At times this breathtaking clarinettist makes the instrument sound re-invented.” - John Fordham - The Guardian “Julian has got it all – sound, technique, ideas and feeling . ‘It’s Clazzical’ exemplifies the brilliant eclecticism of Julian and his Dream Band - I love it.” - Ken Peplowski “Julian is a consummate artist. His life has been dedicated to his craft. Today, his place among the ranks of the all-time great clarinettists is assured.” - Digby Fairweather
